The 1979 Iranian crisis and related oil price shock accelerated Brazil’s conversion of its gasoline supply and automobile fleet. The Brazilian government’s dedication to the ethanol industry declined and incentives given by the government wore off, causing hydrous ethanol-fueled vehicle production to decline in the late 1980s to early 1990s.
