The second-generation Chevrolet Volt is important not only as a high-volume plug-in hybrid, but also because components from its Voltec powertrain are designed to be used in other GM models. Last year, General Motors unveiled the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, with a powertrain very similar to the Volt's.

Based on feedback from these initial customers, Chevrolet may adjust production for 2017 model year. The new mild-hybrid electrical system leverages many of the technologies and components from Chevrolet’s lineup of electrified vehicles, including battery cells from the Malibu Hybrid and software controls developed for the Volt.

General Motors is getting a lot of mileage out of the second-generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt's plug-in hybrid powertrain. Both the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid (without a plug) and the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid feature powertrains based on the newest iteration of the Voltec hardware.
