Tesla was supposed to expand production of the truck at a Gigafactory Nevada expansion announced last year, but the automaker only recently broke ground on the construction project.

Tesla and Panasonic have begun mass production of high-performance cylindrical “2170” (21mm diameter, 70mm height) lithium-ion battery cells at the Gigafactory in Nevada. The output will first be used in Tesla’s energy storage products and then in the Model 3.

In October 2013, Panasonic and Tesla had already expanded their 2011 supply agreement so that Panasonic will supply nearly 2 billion automotive-grade lithium-ion battery cells to Tesla through 31 December 2017 at long-term preferential prices. Finalists for the Gigafactory location are Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

New images from Giga Nevada suggest that Tesla may be looking to develop a mobile “Megacharger” system for the upcoming Class 8 all-electric Semi. To clarify, the “Megacharger” is the name of the Semi’s charging infrastructure, as mentioned by CEO Elon Musk during the vehicle’s unveiling in late 2017.

Panasonic will begin using copper from recycled batteries supplied by Redwood Materials to manufacture new lithium-ion batteries at its factory in Nevada later this year. Redwood Materials was founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel in 2017 with the mission of creating a circular supply chain.
