BMW i announced a home stationary energy storage system solution integrating its BMW i3 vehicle battery at EVS 29 in Montréal. Together with the Federal Ministry of transport in Berlin, the project demonstrated that an energy positive home environment with a battery system is possible. BMW i 360° Electric.

Vattenfall, BMW and Bosch are testing the use of second-life EV batteries in a 2 MW, 2,800 kWh energy storage system in Hamburg, Germany, to keep the electricity grid stable. The electricity storage facility comprises 2,600 battery modules from more than 100 electric vehicles.

Analysis by Lux Research suggests that the market space represented by the emerging lower-cost, 200-mile-range EV will be the biggest coming growth opportunity in electric storage for transportation. According to Lux Research’s Automotive Battery Tracker, in 2014 EVs used $2.1-billion billion worth of energy storage.

In a recent vote, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) authorized Southern California Edison (SCE) to procure between 1,400 and 1,800 megawatts (MW) of electrical capacity in the Los Angeles basin. Among the requirements of the decision is that at least 50 MW must be procured from energy storage resources.
