Scientists at the Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) (Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg) have developed Li-ion batteries that have already demonstrated a very high cycle life of more than 10,000 full cycles with retention of more than 85% of original capacity.

Keio University spin-out ELIIY Power Co., has begun operations at its new Li-ion battery manufacturing plant in Kawasaki. ELIIY plans to market stationary power systems for commercial and residential applications. 2012, it will build an adjacent factory that will be capable of making 1 million cells a year.

Vehicle-To-Building” allows up to six Nissan LEAF EVs to be connected to a building’s power distribution board. Charging is phased during the day so at peak hours, when electricity is most expensive, the building draws power from the cars. It can also be used as backup power source in case of a power outage and/or shortages.

China BAK’s battery module is consists of cylindrical cells that can be used in electric vehicles (EVs), electric motors, electric bicycles (e-bikes) and power storage. The government funds will be used to further develop the battery module.

Honda selected Toshiba Corporation’s SCiB rechargeable Li-ion battery to power the Fit EV. Toshiba will supply battery modules for the new car, which Honda will launch in summer 2012 in Japan and the US. The SCiB charges in about half the time of a typical Li-ion battery, Toshiba says. 20Ah SCiB cell.

A team from Stanford University and Ruhr-Universität Bochum have demonstrated the novel concept of a “desalination battery” that uses an electrical energy input to extract sodium and chloride ions from seawater and to generate fresh water. A constant current is then applied in order to remove the ions from the solution.
