The California Air Resources Board announced nearly $1 million in penalties against 3 companies for late or inaccurate reporting of their greenhouse gas emissions for 2011. Utilities and industrial facilities emitting more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually are required to report their greenhouse gas emissions.

This is the second offtake agreement KiOR has signed for its Columbus, MS, facility, having announced an agreement with Hunt Refining Company in March of 2011. Earlier post.) KiOR expects to begin production at its Columbus facility in the second half of 2012.

Because of this equipment, methane emissions from well completions are 97% lower than calendar year 2011 national emission estimates, released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in April 2013. Nine companies volunteered to have emissions at their well sites measured for the study.

In February 2011, oil sands producers including Nexen, Suncor, Total, Statoil and ConocoPhillips, represented by the Oil Sands Leadership Initiative (OSLI), conducted a winter wetland planting trial in Alberta’s boreal forest. Results recorded during summer 2011 indicate that more than 94% of the black spruce trees have survived.
