Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines have increased market share ten-fold from less than 3% in MY 2008 to more than 30% in MY 2013. mpg, or 22%.

Most small, 2 wheel drive SUVs from MY 1975-2011 have been reclassified from trucks to cars; this lowers the absolute truck share, particularly since the mid-1980s when SUV sales began to increase rapidly. This represents a 5% increase over MY 2009, but MY 2009 truck share was 8% lower than MY 2008.

Mazda Ford Partner was reported to be developing Series PHEV based on Mazda 5 MPV platform. Daimler/Mercedes Took over Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter PHEV program. Batteries not ready.
