Achates Power says that its 2-stroke OP engine offers higher best point brake thermal efficiency than diesel or gasoline engines. Opposed-piston engines have been around since the Junkers Jumo 205 diesel aviation engine in the 1930s. Since the pistons cyclically expose or occlude the exhaust and intake ports, there is no valve train.
