With 3G, we all got our first glimpse at what we now take for granted: using our phones to browse the Internet, stream video, and more. AT&T rolled out its initial 3G networks in four cities in June 2004 —nearly 18 years ago. They very well may be driving around in cars using 3G-connected electronics.

Metcalfe and Boggs had two criteria: The network had to be fast enough to support their laser printer, and it had to connect hundreds of computers within the same building. Thus new nodes could be added while existing connections were live.
