Tesla says Model S comes out on top in US-NCAP crash testing with lowest Vehicle Safety Score

While the Model S is a sedan, it also exceeded the safety score of all SUVs and minivans, according to Tesla. Side crash rating results were added with 1997 model year vehicles and rollover assessments with 2001 models. The Model S lithium-ion battery did not catch fire at any time before, during or after the NHTSA testing.
