Tropos Motors has released the new eXtended Range, ABLE XR low-speed electric utility vehicle. With the largest capacity battery pack of LSVs on the market, the ABLE XR can travel up to 45+ mph (72+ km/h), and up to 160 miles (at 25 mph), as well as tow a max of 2000 pounds on public roads, or 3000 pounds on closed campuses.

As part of the FY 2012 Phase I Release 3 SBIR/STTR Award program, the US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded Michigan-based XG Sciences, a manufacturer of graphene nanoplatelets ( earlier post ), a contract to develop low-cost, high-energy Si/graphene anodes for Li-ion batteries for use in extended range electric vehicle applications.

Not only is it more powerful and contains up to 30% better efficiency than traditional gasoline, etc. Fuel cells are seen as hitting 1% by 2025; extended range electric vehicles, 3%; and battery-electric vehicles, 4%. TDI is raised to 2000 bar, helping increase the power output and reduce emissions.

It's official, the Cadillac Converj is to be the second extended-range electric vehicle after the Volt. Fast charging will extend the range of pure EVs when deployed by freeways. More importantly, it is one of the ways to make EVs accessible to those without access to power where they park in urban centers.

At IAA Commercial Vehicles, Allison Transmission announced that it will offer its medium-duty, fully automatic 9-speed transmission globally, and that it has developed an electric hybrid system with purely electric extended range. The system is pure electric capable, but no electric charging infrastructure is required.

The car is powered by a 330V 16KWh Li Ion battery pack from GS Yuasa Corporation which drives a 47KW Permanent magnet synchronous motor that produces 133 foot pounds of torque. This gives the i-MiEV a top speed of 80mph and a range of up to 100 miles in ideal conditions but more like 70 miles in normal day to day driving.
