The Malibu hybrid shares components with two other GM mild hybrids: the Saturn Aura and Vue hybrids. Service and warranty of existing Malibu hybrids will be unaffected by the decision, as the company has an adequate supply of replacement components, including the 36/42V battery packs.

General Motors is also on the plug-in bandwagon with its Saturn Vue Green Line. The Vue Green Line will get a two-mode hybrid powertrain later this year and a plug-in variant will be introduced in 2009. Toyota is currently testing its own prototype plug-in Prius and 100 Californian households will receive plug-in Priuses this spring.

As part of the culling, GM has the option to re-badge vehicles from the non-core brands, such as the Pontiac G8, Opel Insignia and Saturn Vue. As one of the GM employees at the event told me, “ We can make each car great, we don’t have to worry about cannibalizing sales from a sister vehicle. ”.
