Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. MHI), jointly with SSE plc (formerly Scottish and Southern Energy plc), will begin an energy storage system demonstration project using the power grid in the UK’s Orkney Islands, which has a high proportion of renewable energy generation in relation to demand.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., (MHI) MHI) has delivered a large-capacity Li-ion battery energy storage system to the Shimizu Institute of Technology in Tokyo. The energy storage system, which is capable of 100 kW output with 60 kWh capacity, is currently one of the largest indoor lithium-ion battery-based systems in Japan.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. MHI) has completed the construction of a commercial test plant for lithium-ion secondary batteries at its Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. Besides producing lithium-ion secondary batteries, MHI has entered into the market for the products using the battery.

Finally, in a first-of-its-kind partnership in the United States, Mitsubishi announced a strategic alliance with Oregon to develop an electric car charging infrastructure in the state. If these companies are ultimately successful and can convince EV manufacturers to ditch lithuim ion, we could depend on the already robust recycling program.
