Last week Tesla revealed that its new Model S Plaid EV could reach a speed of near 200 MPH and reach 0 to 60 MPH in 1.99 In fact I drive a Tesla Model S 100D which is pretty damn fast – much faster than what I need or use. Excuse me if I don’t get all giddy with excitement. Our public streets are not race tracks.

After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. Unfortunately, these kits are for much older vehicles like the Porsche 914 and the VW Rabbit.

Tesla was the first OEM to really focus on this and made it a huge part of the Tesla brand positioning — neck snapping acceleration in a family sedan that makes you go “wow.” It was needed to eliminate the view by many that EVs were simplify glorified golf carts. The public gets it now. EVs are quick.
