The Plug-in Car Grant will be distributed directly to consumers at the point of purchase and will be managed in a similar way to the grant made as part of the Government’s scrappage scheme. Cars will be discounted at the point of purchase and the subsidy claimed by the manufacturer to provide a straightforward process for the consumer.

Although the UK Government has pledged a £5,000 subsidy for EV buyers from 2011 and subsidies are also offered by the US, Chinese governments, most European governments typically fall short in terms of offering EV-related subsidies meaning there is insufficient motivation for consumers to consider the purchase of an EV, the report concludes.

What isclear is that the full £5,000 will not be available for a £8,000 G-Wiz or a£15,000 Smart EV. The G-Wiz, made in India, now offers a lithium-ion battery option that extendsits driving range from 48 to 75 miles – but doubles the price.
