Companies and universities in Michigan are receiving more than $1 billion of the grants. Large automakers based in Michigan, including GM, Chrysler, and Ford, will receive a total of more than $400 million to manufacture thousands of advanced hybrid and electric vehicles as well as batteries and electric drive components. (GM GM plans to handle module and pack assembly itself, earlier post.) He served as the chief engineer for the Ford Escape Hybrid from 1998 to 2003 and holds 12 patents.
