The EPA rates fuel economy, when using the hybrid gasoline-only engine at 30 miles per gallon. This is excellent fuel economy for a 5,010-pound nicely styled shoe box. The regenerative braking system, which recharges the 16-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery, converts kinetic energy into electricity when braking or coasting.

Rising fuel-economy standards during the 2020s will do the same. It has now received a Certificate of Conformity for the Semi from the EPA. A 150 kW charger may recharge a battery pack to 80 percent in about 2.5 Large commercial trucks and other heavy equipment have run on diesel fuel for many decades now.

There are already spaces in New York City and Los Angeles, and there are now two in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I’m located. Use that number to compare with other electric vehicles or, better yet, use the kWh/100 miles metric that is also on all new vehicles. That’s pretty normal for a battery of this size in 2021.
