Ford has a winner on their hands with the all-new 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup. Maybe Ford went with Maverick because it can mean “pursuing rebellious, even potentially disruptive, policies or ideas.” Ford has certainly done this by resurrecting the compact pickup genre that was once so popular in the 1960s-1980s.

Hyundai’s first-ever pickup comes at a time where the Ford Maverick compact pickup is making waves of its own. The Ford Maverick is more truck-like, while the Hyundai Santa Cruz is more car-like. The features list is long and deep with a full safety suite, choices of front-wheel and all-wheel drive and two engine options.

For even more space, the second row folds flat producing plenty of room for a run to the DIY store or maybe some antiquing. Road Test: 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid. Road Test: 2019 Ford Edge. The limited storage behind the raised third row becomes a very useful space when that row is dropped. It was smooth and sweet to drive.

The easiest conversions are for 2004-2008 Prius (not 2001-2003 Prius) and the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner Hybrid. So far, most start as hybrids.
