It tested the performance of two 2007 model Prius hybrids and then converted them into plug-in hybrids using a Hymotion 5kWh lithium-ion battery conversion kit. It believes its study confirms the viability of electricity as a clean and low cost transportation fuel while highlighting the increased efficiencies of plug-in hybrid technologies.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) The F6 DM uses ferrous batteries, with no lithium content, that BYD says are high-energy density and low cost.
