Launched in 2001, Xbox was built to oppose Sony’s PlayStation 2, released in 2000, which had a DVD drive and could (with an accessory) connect to the Internet. Microsoft worried that some consumers might view it as a low-cost PC alternative. It included a bird’s-eye perspective of locales like Machu Picchu, in Peru.
