Nissan is leading a consortium which aims to establish a network of rapid chargers for electric vehicles running the full length and breadth of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Installation of the rapid chargers is due to be completed by the end of 2014.

The 500-megawatt (MW) HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Light transmission connection is the highest capacity link of its kind, based on voltage source converter (VSC) technology, to go into commercial operation. The new link also facilitates power trading between the two countries and connects Ireland to the European grid.
