Hitachi has already received orders for enough lithium ion batteries for 100,000 hybrid autos that General Motors Corp. Hitachi will mass produce two new types of lithium ion batteries for use in next-generation hybrid vehicles. The Nikkei reports that Hitachi Ltd. Capacity will initially be raised more than 600% by next autumn.

In another invited paper at ECS 215, Mark Verbrugge, Materials and Processes Laboratory, General Motors R&D Center, presented an update of work done in collaboration with Professor Yang-Tse Cheng at the University of Kentucky on the role of mechanical deformation on the life of electrode materials for traction batteries.
