Bosch is working on sensor technology for air taxis. The Boston Consulting Group predicts that people around the world will take 1 billion flights in air taxis in 2030, once sharing services have also established a presence on fixed routes above the ground; most of those air taxis will be capable of operating without a pilot.

As part of a program to develop the needed flight rules and communications systems, we are leading a consortium of a dozen companies and universities, called the North Texas Cohort , that is operating an experimental air corridor north of Dallas, Texas. So we, and others, are figuring out how such flights will be accomplished.

Two hours before a flight, the system reviews weather conditions, any airspace that will be closed, and all commercial and private flight plans registered with the Federal Aviation Administration, to suggest the most efficient route. The airline estimates it saves 17 hours a day in taxi time and 1.4 million gallons of jet fuel a year.

Glidden said Cruise has a “longer pathway towards scaled commercialization.” ” The company last year had plans to roll out self-driving taxis in nearly a dozen U.S. The company’s permit to operate in California was suspended and Cruise has stopped all testing on public roads in the United States.

Team partners will purchase a total of 191 commercially available light- to heavy-duty alternative-fuel and advanced-technology vehicles. Vehicles to be deployed include 163 CNG, the vast majority for high mileage taxis and 18 heavy-duty LNG refuse trucks. The project also includes construction of a B20 station.
