Buoyed by the US government’s CARS (“Cash for Clunkers”) program, US auto sales slowed their decline in the US in July, dropping on 12.1% Light truck sales were led by the RAV4 compact SUV with best-ever July sales of 15,912 units, up 32.5% On 27 July, Chrysler restarted production at 9 of its 11 manufacturing facilities.

The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS for short, or ‘cash for clunkers’ as it is more commonly known) was the US’s answer to the scrappage schemes in Germany and the UK which appeared to have revitalised their respective automotive sectors. With General Motors and Chrysler also showing signs of modest improvement, all looked rosy.

Light trucks (pickups, minivans/vans, and truck SUVs), accounted for 36% of all light-duty vehicle production in MY 2012, the second lowest level since 1993. There are more than twice as many SUV models that achieve 25 mpg (9.4 Chrysler-Fiat had the highest CO 2 emissions and lowest fuel economy, followed by Daimler.
