President Grover Cleveland was an early adopter of the electrified Christmas tree, as shown in this 1896 photo. The earliest Christmas lights used miniature versions of Edison's pear-shaped carbon-filament bulbs, which had fragile exhaust tips that were prone to breaking. Each 8-bulb set cost only $5, with a wholesale price of $3.50.
