In most conversions cost is about the same because of needless weight. Lead batts are around 98% recycled. In EV’s they do need replacing in about 5 yrs if done right. But that cost in a built as an EV is much less than an ICE’s costs by about 1/2. Now add much cheaper materials and NiMH is now obsolete.
