Oak Ridge National Laboratory, originally known as Clinton Laboratories, was established in 1943 to carry out the pilot-scale production and separation of plutonium for the World War II Manhattan Project. This is by no means the only neutron scattering facility in the US or the world, but it is one of the leading centers.
