The 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show opens to the public today with a glittering display of green cars taking pride of place. The show, based at the Los Angeles Convention Center will host more than 30 significant world and North American debuts and feature more than 900 vehicles from sports cars and sedans to crossovers and minivans.

In last week’s edition of The Green Piece Column, we looked at the leaders in the green car race including the likes of Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen and Nissan. Its first model, the Tesla Roadster, was the first production car to use lithium-ion batteries and was the first electric vehicle with a range greater than 200miles.
