To date, the relatively high cost of batteries has kept electric and plug-in vehicles at the fringes of the auto industry. UC Davis professor Andy Frank, the so-called father of the plug-in, has formed a company, called Efficient Drivetrains Inc., that will make components for parallel hybrids (see Green Light post).

Annual use of an EV should be less than the average cost of $8,000 per year for using a gasoline in many countries including the USA. Pre-paid 600 kilometer cards are one approach that is suggested. A free car on a four-year plan in France is another idea mentioned by Shai Agassi, CEO of Project Better Place.

Considering the cost of batteries, these are disposable cars. Did you really expect the domestic auto industry to maintain marketshare when we opened our market to free trade without first getting commitments from those other countries to open theirs? Then I recall that my laptop batteries barely ever last four years.
