Plug-ins could be recharged by plugging into a standard wall socket, delivering “electric” gallons of gas for about 75 cents a gallon at prevailing electric rates. The vans, which have a 20-mile all-electric range, will be outfitted with either nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries or lithium ion (Li-Ion) batteries.

There are companies that are reinventing the lead-acid battery to make it more competitive with lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride in terms of storage capacity versus weight, durability, and cold weather performance. But that cost in a built as an EV is much less than an ICE’s costs by about 1/2.
