Although Volkswagen sales were down 5.1% for the first half, in June unit sales rose 6%. VW, Daimler subsidiary Daug and Varta developed a NimH battery in the early 90s, and the VW group put the Audi duo hybrid on the road in 1997. Volkswagen had begun exploring hybrid and electric drive technology in the 1990s.
