We were surprised to cross the 30 mpg mark for this 3,915-pound, five-passenger midsize SUV.

In 240 miles driving around Southern California we averaged 23 mpg, but in a 100-mile run with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we averaged 31.2 mpg, exceeding the EPA figure. Running on unleaded premium, the EPA has rated the fuel economy at 19 mpg city/25 highway/21 combined. Where we did much better was on a 102-mile freeway run in either Eco or Smart mode and with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we achieved 27.5 Tech Abounds.
