The USABC specifies two PHEV designs to guide its battery requirements: an AE-10 crossover and AE-40 mid-sized car. the PHEV design with the lowest battery power and energy requirements. They note that other requirements may make NiMH unsuitable for PHEV applications.

VW, Daimler subsidiary Daug and Varta developed a NimH battery in the early 90s, and the VW group put the Audi duo hybrid on the road in 1997. in pure electric vehicles in 2020. Volkswagen is partnering with a number of companies, including Sanyo and Toshiba, on batteries, power electronics and electric machines.
