Amazon has been on a path towards the kind of robots that can pick items since at least 2015, when the company sponsored the Amazon Picking Challenge at ICRA. After years of work, the system is functioning well enough prototypes are stowing actual inventory items at an Amazon fulfillment center in Washington state.
