The Volkswagen Group is continuing its restructuring in the aftermath of the diesel engine emissions scandal. He was appointed Executive Vice-President of Production at SEAT in 2002, becoming Deputy President of the brand in 2009, and was subsequently named Group Chief Officer for the Environment, Energy and New Business Areas in 2012.

An Argonne researcher reached consensus with researchers from other national labs, universities, the Air Resources Board, automakers, utilities and AD Little to estimate in July 2002 that PHEVs using nighttime power reduce greenhouse gases by 46 to 61 percent. In 2003-04, the US Marine Corps demonstrated a diesel-electric PHEV-20 HUMVEE.
