Originally introduced in 2021, the Volkswagen ID.4 has since undergone some serious changes. One of the most significant updates to the popular SUV crossover is where it is made. In 2023, Volkswagen moved its production of the ID.4 to its plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, which allowed the popular SUV to join the ranks of EVs that qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

After losing its tax credit on January 1, the ID.4 officially regained its $7500 tax credit on January 24, 2024. According to 2024 tax credit updates, the $7500 EV tax credit is now available to eligible buyers as a discount at checkout at the Volkswagen dealership.

Volkswagen also added an entry-level standard trim with a more attractive base price to its lineup, further expanding the ID.4’s appeal on the mass market, as well as the Pro S Plus trim with additional luxury features. In this spotlight, we will examine everything the Volkswagen ID.4 has to offer, compare available trims, and take a look at how you can save money with EV incentives by financing through EV Life.

Volkswagen ID.4 Interior/Exterior and Safety Features

The Volkswagen ID.4 provides a nice balance between comfort, practicality, and style, combined with decent power and a respectable battery range. Its five available trims give drivers loads of options to choose from, plus its standard three years of complimentary 30-minute fast-charging sessions at any Electrify America charging station can help ease any potential range anxiety.

Interior

The Volkswagen ID.4’s interior offers a modern design, high-tech features, and plenty of cargo space. The dashboard is minimalist, with only a few physical controls and a central 12-inch infotainment touchscreen that controls navigation, wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a WIFI hotspot, and voice recognition capabilities. The ID.4 provides a decent amount of cargo space for a smaller SUV, with over 30 cubic feet of room behind the second row of seats, which expands to over 64 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

Exterior

The Volkswagen ID.4 features a sleek exterior design with clean lines, oval headlights, and a large air intake. The crossover SUV also has black body cladding, oval taillights with a horizontal light bar, and a small rear spoiler.

All ID.4 models come with a number of desirable safety features, including:

Volkswagen ID.4 Standard

In an attempt to provide a starting price well below the $40,000 mark, Volkswagen introduced the ID.4 Standard trim in 2023, which comes equipped with a smaller 62-kWh battery and a reduction in range to 208 miles. Despite that, the Standard is still impressive. It has a plethora of desirable features, including 19-inch alloy wheels, exterior LED lights, rain-sensing wipers, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, cloth/leatherette seating, and heated front seats.

The rear-wheel-drive ID.4 Standard S trim includes a number of additional upgrades over the Standard but still contains the smaller 62 kWh battery. It adds 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, a panoramic glass roof, a hands-free liftgate, imitation leather upholstery, 12-way adjustable front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a rear center armrest and cargo pass-through.

Volkswagen ID.4 Pro

The main difference between the Standard and Pro trims is the Pro’s larger battery and increased range of 255 miles. The Pro model also has fast-charging capability for public-charging stations. All-wheel-drive is optional, adding a second motor for the front wheels and increasing its horsepower, and includes a heated windshield and tow hitch.

Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S Plus

Introduced in 2023 with the Standard trim, the stylish ID.4 Pro S Plus offers additional luxury features, including black 20-inch alloy wheels, a black roof, power-folding outboard mirrors, a surround-view camera, tri-zone automatic climate control, and heated outboard rear seats. The Pro S Plus also comes with an upgraded digital audio system. Just like other Pro trims, AWD is optional.

How to Save Money on Your Volkswagen ID.4

Volkswagen ID.4’s relocation to Tennessee ensured that all the available trims would qualify for the federal EV tax credit of $7,500 is now available (effective January 2024) at point-of-sale. But that’s just the beginning. There are also plenty of state and local EV incentives available to help reduce the cost of your new Volkswagen ID.4.

In California, the Clean Cars 4 All program helps lower-income Californians by offering cash incentives of up to $9,500 to retire their older gas-powered vehicles and invest in EVs.

Colorado residents can take advantage of the Colorado Electric Vehicle Tax Credit, which offers up to $5,000 in tax credits for purchasing an electric vehicle.

And these are just a few of the available programs, grants, and rebates available at the federal, state, and local levels offered to those looking to make the switch to an electric vehicle.
