The first million

An EV sales milestone is achieved in California

California Governor Gavin Newsom with Michael Macias, buyer of state’s one millionth EV

Stockton resident Michael Macias became the one-millionth buyer of an electric vehicle (EV) in California when he purchased his Volkswagen ID.4 on December 10 last year. It marked the first time any state in the U.S. has reached this level.

Macias learned about the distinction when California Governor Gavin Newsom asked to pay him a visit in February. Together, they made a promotional video to mark the event.

According to statistics from Veloz, as well as the California Energy Commission, 1,054,095 EVs were sold in the state by the end of 2021 (a few hydrogen fuel cell cars are included in this number). With approximately 2.4 million sold across the U.S., this represents sales 7 times higher than the next closest state, and more than the next 10 states combined.
