The 34th annual Historic Route 66 Arizona Fun Run, going electric this year with the sponsorship of the Electric Vehicle Association in partnership with the Scottsdale EVA, is scheduled for Friday, May 5 through Sunday, May 7.

Stretching 140 miles of the original iconic roadway from Seligman to Topoc, communities along the way plan to host local events for all participants.

“We’re hoping as many EVA members as possible from across the US will join us in the historic Fun Run,” said Elaine Borseth, EVA president. “We’re thrilled to be co-sponsoring and we’re looking forward to  substantially increasing the number of electric vehicles (EVs) that pariticpate.”

Borseth added that potential attendess should sign up sooner than later and book hotels well in advance.

Show N Shine

Of particular note are plans for downtown Kingman, Arizona, home to the Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum housed within the Arizona Route 66 Museum at the city’s Visitor Center.

“We’re looking forward to setting up our display area in the center’s parking lot,” said Scottsdale EVA President John S. Martinson, adding that EVs participating in the Fun Run will be displayed and judged at the “Show N Shine Car Show” scheduled for Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM.

“EVA members can qualify for the ‘Best EV’ and ‘Best Conversion EV’ awards, Martinson continued. “We’re also hoping that an EVA chapter will win in the general category of' ‘Most Vehicles from a Car Club.’ That would be a significant achievement.”

Additional award categories will be added by the EVA, and all judging for EV-related award categories will be led by Jeff Finn.

The backstory

One of the original American highways, Route 66 was established on November 11, 1926. The “Mother Road,” as John Steinbeck coined it in his classic 1939 novel, The Grapes of Wrath, winds from Chicago to Los Angeles, passing through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.  In 1987, the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona created the annual Historic Route 66 Fun Run.
