Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

I'll take anything free, even just to give it to somebody else. Shouldn't there have been a Blizzak drawing recently?
Jump, monkeys, jump! Do as your oil masters demand, and there's a chance you'll get... some oil.
Does the fine print say that Quaker State and VerticalScope will own your soul for infinity?
@ Paul: Back with the '72 I was changing every 2000 for no other reason than my dad did. I did the same with the '85 I mentioned. When I took it in to get work done to correct the previous owners error (changed oil once in 16000 mi.) the shop manager said they had never seen the interior of any engine as clean as mine was which told me I was doing something right for my car.
After reading many articles on oil life I've found a common thought/thread. Regular oil wears out around 3000 mi., synthetic blends last about 5000, and full synthetic can go about 10k. I currently use a blend for no particular reason and change every 5k (I do my own changes). Personally I go the smaller interval if the above is less than OEM recommendations. For the relatively small cost to change (and based on my experience in the past, especially the '85) it's worth doing. Side note: back when synthetics first came out, my brother was using Mobil 1 and changing every 2k. I think that's a bit excessive, but it was his car, not mine.
It's really up to you, Paul. I'm a firm believer in the owner needing to be totally comfortable with the approach they are taking whether it agrees with the 'experts' or not. I am happy with my choice and all my vehicles have gone well over 200k without issue due to engine failure.
