Used Car of the Day: 2002 Nissan R34

Today we bring you an insanely expensive used car -- it's so expensive because it's so rare.

It's 2002 Nissan R34.

Only 750 were made, and only 62 in this color.

This one is a V-Spec II and has a Haltech-Ti exhaust and some NISMO mods.

The New Jersey-based seller appears to be some sort of collector and/or small dealer, based on his Instagram, and we usually try to avoid featuring cars sold by these folks -- simply because UCOTD finds are more interesting when they belong to some average Joe or Jane -- but this one looked cool.

Even at the $340,000 price. Click here if you want to see it.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Buying this as an investment is much riskier than rare 60's era performance cars. If I had the cash for this I'd lean towards a Shelby Mustang or Galaxie Lightweight.

My friend's son has a R34 he races at the track. The RB25 is currently being rebuilt to around 600hp. In a stripped R34 this engine should make it quite fast.

  • Funky D I had a Versa Note for a rental that I survived a week of driving in NJ and NYC. Felt like a sitting duck most of the week! However, I can drive like a homicidal cabbie when the need arises, so I made it.Mirage is the Dollar General of cars, it is just barely adequate for the task.
  • Funky D If at all possible, I will not own what my youngest son called a "grayscale" (black, white, silver or gray) vehicle for the rest of my driving career!Ford Race Red (or something close) for me, please.I might even consider something like Toyota Blue Flame, but no grayscales, please!
  • 1995 SC It's fine except for the price
  • JK I think it is two things. First, one often has to pay more for unique colors (especially in Europe). Second, there is a worry about resale. We settled on a conservative blue because we were afraid of having problems selling something that popped.
  • Jalop1991 My wife got a unicorn car, a bright blue with carmel interior. We love it. Too bad more automakers and/or dealers don't want to go this route.
