Stellantis Patents Fake Engine Vibrations for EVs

When Dodge previewed its Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust for the all-electric Charger Daytona SRT concept (pictured), enthusiasts were divided. Some thought the idea of a faux exhaust system, designed to help EVs mimic the howl of a V8, was a cringe-worthy gimmick. But others felt it broke new ground in terms of vehicular sound design and would ensure electric cars could retain some of the magic of combustion vehicles. Regardless of which camp you happen to staked your tent, parent company Stellantis has continued on with the premise and has likewise patented a system that creates fake engine vibrations to further the illusion of combustion-derived propulsion.


The patent was actually published with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in May of last year. However, our market failed to take notice until someone tipped off Mopar Insiders last week.


Stellantis has found itself in a tricky situation since buying up the former Fiat Chrysler properties. Brands like Dodge are decidedly American and have a clientele that’s about as EV averse as you’ll likely find anywhere in the developed world. Mopar fans have an overwhelming penchant for V8 motors and minor obsession with the glory days of American muscle. However, like all Stellantis brands, corporate leadership has said it’s supposed to pivot toward smaller engines and electrification.


This has not gone over well with die-hard fans of the marquee, especially those worried about European influence. Stellantis knows this and has been developing devices that effectively help EVs mimic the experience of riding within a raucous combustion-engined automobile. Previewing the 126-dB Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust was the first step. This was followed immediately by the “eRupt multi-speed transmission” that looks to simulate shifting. We now have the company patenting phony engine vibrations, which will undoubtedly appear in electrified versions of the Dodge Charger if the company can figure out how to make it work.


The patented vibration device falls under the “Active Sound Enhancement” (ASE) umbrella. Based on the details provided in the related documents, it will work in conjunction with the fake engine noises future Stellantis products will presumably offer.

The ASE system is at the forefront of Stellantis’ mission to make EVs more appealing and accessible to a broader audience. It addresses a common concern with EVs: their near-silent operation, which can pose safety challenges for pedestrians. To overcome this, Stellantis engineers have developed a system that not only replicates the authentic engine sounds of ICE vehicles but also simulates the tactile sensations of driving one.
At its core, the ASE system utilizes a sophisticated setup that combines sensor technology with advanced signal processing. Sensors strategically placed throughout the vehicle monitor various parameters such as motor speed, acceleration, wheel speed, and torque. This real-time data is then fed to a central controller, which orchestrates the generation of engine sounds tailored to the driving conditions.
However, Stellantis goes beyond just recreating sound. They recognize that the driving experience is multi-sensory, which is why they’ve integrated the Active Vibration Enhancement (AVE) system alongside ASE. AVE complements ASE by generating vibrations within the vehicle’s structure that mimic those produced by an ICE engine. These vibrations, transmitted through the vehicle body to the occupants, create a sensation akin to driving a traditional sports/muscle car.

Electric vehicles are interesting from a performance perspective. Instantaneous torque can result in some truly incredible acceleration at lower speeds. But the event is still bizarrely placid due to the vehicle lacking an engine or traditional transmission to offer the additional feedback we normally associate with powerful automobiles. EVs also have a tendency to lose their might as they approach highway velocities, where the pageantry of a high-revving combustion motor with extra forward gears gulping down air really starts to come into play.


Stellantis is clearly trying to address all of the above. Faux engine noises and vibrations are likely to be on-demand features you can shut down when you don’t want them and will spring to life whenever you want a more intense experience. Meanwhile, novel transmissions will help simulate shift points (adding to driving engagement) and may even improve EV acceleration at higher speeds if the design is intended to do more than simply simulate gearing. 


The Active Vibration Enhancement rig uses a “force generator coupled to the vehicle’s body or chassis. But it’s supposed to be able to focus vibration to specific points throughout the vehicle, such as the steering wheel or seats. There will be loads of customization and an “ immersive driving experience, particularly for enthusiasts accustomed to the visceral sensations of ICE vehicles.”


It’s hard to know exactly how to feel about the above concepts. Stellantis is addressing the exact kind of complaints the Dodge clientele already has with electric vehicles. But there’s something about the above that is still somewhat irksome. Loading a vehicle up with loads of artificial vibration points seems like it would add significant production costs and needless amounts of complexity. Granted, your author curses faulty tire pressure sensors, so there’s definitely some amount of bias present here.


But it’s just not evident that the juice will be worth the squeeze on everyday models, especially as EV saturation looks to have peaked for the time being and we’re seeing our market shifting away from combustion vehicles boasting lofty price tags. There’s no way sound enhancement devices won’t be heavily monetized if the automaker thinks there’s money to be made.


That said, I suppose many would like to at least have the option to simulate some rumble on an EV. But those features will need to be packaged in a way that’s truly impressive and priced low enough to rationalize. At the end of the day, it feels like Stellantis has correctly identified a comprehensive solution to a problem it has ironically enough created for itself. These experiential enhancements are ultimately gimmicks designed to replace something you used to be allowed to have and presumably still want — or else what was the point of Stellantis developing them in the first place?

    They're also going to include a prerecorded engine sound then broadcast it through the speaker inside the car and speakers mounted externally under the car. Stellantis, are you really working to become more of a joke than you already are?

      Alan if a sound makes people happy then that is their choice for me I like quiet the best. I grew up during a time when a quiet vehicle was considered the height of luxury. I do realize that there are requirements for pedestrian safety now to add noise to EVs but I would rather have a softer more pleasant sound if I have to have a sound otherwise no sound is best.

  • Steve S. Steve was a car guy. In his younger years he owned a couple of European cars that drained his bank account but looked great and were fun to drive while doing it. This was not a problem when he was working at a good paying job at an aerospace company that supplied the likes of Boeing and Lockheed-Martin, but after he was laid off he had to work a number of crummy temp jobs in order to keep paying the rent, and after his high-mileage BMW was totaled in an accident, he took the insurance payout and decided to get something a little less high maintenance. But what to get? A Volkswagen? Maybe a Volvo? No, he knew that the parts for those were just as expensive and they had the same reputation for spending a lot of time in the shop as any other European make. Steve was sick and tired of driving down that road."Just give me four wheels and a seat," said Steve to himself. "I'll buy something cooler later when my work situation improves".His insurance company was about to stop paying for the rental car he was driving, so he had to make a decision in a hurry. He was not really a fan of domestics but he knew that they were generally reliable and were cheap to fix when they did break, so he decided to go to the nearest dealership and throw a dart at something.On the lot was a two year old Pontiac Sunfire. It had 38,000 miles on it and was clean inside and out. It looked reasonably sporty, and Steve knew that GM had been producing the J-car for so long that they pretty much worked the bugs out of it. After taking a test drive and deciding that the Ecotec engine made adequate power he made a deal. The insurance check paid for about half of it, and he financed the rest at a decent rate which he paid off within a year.Steve's luck took a turn for the better when he was offered a job working for the federal government. It had been months since he went on the government jobs website and threw darts at job listings, so he was surprised at the offer. It was far from his dream job, and it didn't pay a lot, but it was stable and had good benefits. It was the "four wheels and a seat" of jobs. "I can do this temporarily while I find a better job", he told himself.But the year 2007 saw the worst economic crash since the Great Depression. Millions of people were losing their jobs, the housing market was in a free fall, people were declaring bankruptcy left and right, and the temporary job began to look more and more permanent. Steve didn't like his job, and he hated his supervisors, but he considered himself lucky that he was working when so many people were not. And the federal government didn't lay people off.So he settled in for the long haul. That meant keeping the Sunfire. He didn't enjoy it, but he didn't hate it either, and it did everything he asked of it without complaint.Eventually he found a way to tolerate his job too, and he built seniority while paying off his debts. There was a certain feeling of comfort and satisfaction of being debt-free, and he even began to build some savings, which was increasingly important for someone now in their forties.Another bit of luck came a few years later when Steve's landlord decided to sell the house Steve was renting, at the bottom of the housing market, and offered it to Steve for what he had in it. Steve's house was small and cramped, and he didn't really like it, but thanks to his savings and good credit he became a homeowner in an up and coming neighborhood.Fourteen years later Steve was still working that temporary job, still living in that cramped little house that he now hated, and still drove the Sunfire because it wouldn't die. For years now he dreamed of making a change, but then the pandemic happened and threw the economy and life in general into chaos. Steve weathered the pandemic, kept his job when millions of people were losing theirs, and sheltered in place in that crummy little house, with Netflix, HBO, and a dozen other streaming services keeping him company, and drove to and from work in the Sunfire because it was four wheels and a seat and that's all he needed for now.Steve's life was secure, but a kind of dullness had set in. He existed, but the fire went out; even when the pandemic ended and life returned to normal Steve's life went on as it had for years; an endless Groundhog Day of work, home, work, home. He never got his real-estate license or finished college and got his bachelor's, never got a better job, never used his passport to do some traveling in Europe. He lost interest in cars. "To think how much money I wasted on hot cars when I was younger", he said to himself. He never married and lost interest in dating. "No woman would want me anyway. I've gotten so dull and uninteresting that I even bore myself".Eventually the Sunfire began to give trouble. With 200,000 miles on the clock it was leaking oil, developing electrical gremlins, and wallow around on blown-out shocks. Steve wasn't hurting for money and thought about treating himself to a new car. "A BMW 3-series, maybe. Or maybe an Alfa Romeo Giulia!" He began to peruse the listings on Autotrader. "Maybe this is just what I need to pull out of this funk. Put a little fun back in my life. Yeah, and maybe go back to the gym, and who knows, start dating again and do some traveling while I'm still young enough to enjoy it!"Then his father passed away and left him a low-mileage Ford. Steve didn't like it or hate it, but it was four wheels and a seat, and that's all he needed right now."Is it too late to have a mid-life crisis?" Steve thought to himself. For what he needed more than that stable job, that house with an enviably small mortgage payment, and that reliable car was a good kick in the hindquarters. "What the hell am I afraid of? I should be afraid that things will never change!"But the depression was like a drug, a numbness that they call "dysthymia"; where you're neither here or there, alive or dead, happy or sad. It was a persistent overcast, a low ceiling that kept him grounded. The Sunfire sat in his driveway getting buried by the needles from his neighbor's overhanging pine trees which were planted right on the property line. "Those f---ing pine trees! That's another thing I hate about this damn house!" Eventually the Sunfire wouldn't start. "I don't blame you", he said to the car as he trudged past it to drive the Ford to another Groundhog Day at that miserable job.
