Groundbreaking in Turkmenistan for major synthetic gasoline plant; first full-scale Haldor Topsøe TIGAS facility

Green Car Congress

The plant in Turkmenistan is extremely important to us, because it is the first large scale project in the world where we can showcase how our technology can help a nation with huge natural gas reserves monetize their natural resources by diversifying beyond conventional gas markets into transportation fuels. Because the gasoline produced by the GSK-10 catalyst is high octane, it can be used as transportation fuel without further modification.

The project is slated to be the first plant in the US to produce Fischer-Tropsch GTL transportation fuels and other products from natural gas, according to Sasol. GTL transportation fuel is cleaner burning than conventional diesel with a roughly comparable, and potentially lower, greenhouse gas profile, Sasol says. Sasol is also exploring GTL opportunities in Uzbekistan.

Report Finds Water Stress Rapidly Becoming Key Strategic Risk to Commerce; Impending Water/Energy Collision

Green Car Congress

Cotton is typically grown in arid regions converted to farmland; in Uzbekistan, for example, which is one of the world’s largest exporters of cotton, the extraction of water from rivers that supply the Aral Sea is a key contributor to its deterioration and desertification. While the sector is at particular risk from climate change, forests are also key components of watersheds, influencing water availability, transport, and quality. by Jack Rosebro.
