Electric vehicle maker Rivian was listed among Consumer Reports’ (CR) worst car brands for 2024. This was despite the Rivian R1T pickup truck and Rivian R1S SUV performing well in the organization’s tests. Overall, Rivian received an overall score of 55 from Consumer Reports, the fifth lowest overall.

As noted by Consumer Reports, its list of worst automakers for 2024 represented the bottom five of the 34 brands that were ranked in the organization’s annual member survey. Each brand that was evaluated by Consumer Reports was rated according to vehicle road test scores, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.

As per CR in a YouTube video about its findings, the Rivian R1S and R1T actually received praise for their performance in the organization’s tests. It was the owner surveys that ultimately revealed significant concerns about the automaker, particularly with predicted reliability. Some CR members reported encountering major problems within the first few weeks of ownership.

“While these models performed well in CR’s test program, reliability has been a major issue, with one CR member telling us their R1T was ‘bricked three weeks after delivery,'” Consumer Reports noted in its video.

Below Rivian is GMC, which received an overall score of 53 from the organization. None of GMC’s models received CR’s recommendation this year, with the 2023 Sierra 1500 specifically being called out due to owners reporting noise issues and reliability concerns with GM’s 6.2-liter engines.

Similarly, all Jaguar and Land Rover models failed to earn CR’s recommendation, with the two brands earning overall scores of 52 and 50, respectively. The Jaguar F-Pace faced criticism for noise and unresolved service issues, while Land Rover’s Range Rover Sport, Velar, and Evoque were cited for reliability concerns.

Jeep, a brand known for its loyal following, captured the title of worst overall brand according to CR, with an overall score of 46. Despite their popularity, Jeep vehicles received low predicted reliability ratings in Consumer Reports’ analysis. One CR member reported a persistent vibration issue with their Jeep Grand Cherokee L that the dealership couldn’t resolve, leaving the car out of service for nearly 40 days.
