Last week we told you how the City of New York had just taken ownership of 50, 2011 Chevrolet Volts in an attempt to green up everything from the NYPD to official departments few will have heard of. Now Seattle has followed suit, with the announcement that the city will be buying 35 all-electric Nissan Leafs by the end of 2012.

Zipcar was the first car-sharing company in the United States to introduce electric vehicles, starting in Boston in 2002, and the first to offer hybrid vehicles through a partnership with Honda in Seattle in 2003. Honda’s 2014 Fit EV, based on the popular five-passenger Fit, is rated at a combined fuel economy of 118 MPGe.

Buses powered by HybriDrive currently transport nearly two million passengers a day in cities across North America and the UK including Houston, London, Manchester, New York, Ottawa, Oxford, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and others. Atlanta, Ga. and Everett, Wash., and suburban Chicago by the end of 2011.

NTSB said that examination of the flight recorder data from the JAL B-787 airplane indicated that the APU battery did not exceed its designed voltage of 32 volts. Several other components have been sent for download or examination to Boeing’s facility in Seattle and manufacturer’s facilities in Japan. ( Earlier post.)

Lithium polymer battery packs from Corvus Energy were recently installed in Europe’s first hybrid tugboat, the RotorTug RT Adriaan of KOTUG, an international maritime service provider headquartered in The Netherlands.
