The pilot project, which will form part of Volkswagen’s operations in Rwanda, was officially announced today by Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Group South Africa and responsible for the Sub-Sahara Africa Region, in the presence of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda, Right Honourable Dr. Edouard Ngirente.

The Volkswagen brand has founded “Volkswagen Mobility Solutions Rwanda”, a company based in Rwanda. The objective is to provide modern integrated mobility services in Africa in future. As part of its worldwide regionalization strategy, Volkswagen is planning to expand its business presence significantly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Volkswagen is taking a further step to develop market potentials in Africa. The concept provides for app-based mobility solutions such as car-sharing and ride-hailing to be offered in Rwanda. Volkswagen is consistently developing market potentials in Africa. Rwanda does not have an established vehicle industry.

The Volkswagen brand currently has three operations in the region: the company has been building cars in South Africa since 1951.
