Tesla Market share Grows to 6.1% in Sweden

Data from Swedish auto industry association Mobility Sweden showed 1,789 new Tesla cars were registered in December, up from 1,645 in the same month of 2022. Market share grew to 6.1% from 4.6%.

The total sales for the year saw a slight increase while EV sales grew 18%.

Tesla’s Model Y was Sweden’s top-selling car in 2023 with 16,412 new vehicles registered, ahead of Volvo’s XC40 with 13,606 units.

A total of 289,665 passenger cars were registered in 2023, which is a slight increase of 0.5 percent compared to 2022. The fact that there was an increase despite the current economic situation is due to the fact that we entered 2023 with historically large order books and that delivery capacity has gradually returned to normal after the effects of the pandemic. The share of rechargeable cars increased marginally from a share of 56 percent in 2022 to just under 60 percent, where the share of electric cars amounted to nearly 39 percent and plug-in hybrids to 21 percent. In number, electric cars increased by 18 percent, while plug-in hybrids decreased by just over 8 percent. At the same time, it is worth noting that the rapid rate of increase in electrification in recent years has slowed sharply into this year. All the growth in electric cars took place on the corporate side, while the private market has been cold throughout the year as a result of the economic situation and the removed climate bonus. In 2022, private customers drove the electrification, with 56 percent of the new electric cars. In 2023, the share of private customers is down to 33 percent and it is again the business side that is driving the electrification.

In 2023, Sweden is estimated to land in seventh place in terms of the number of newly registered electric cars in the world, with China being the largest country with 5.6 million electric cars, followed by the United States with 1.1 million. In Europe, Sweden has the third highest share of electric cars, with Norway dominating with 83 percent.
