Portland State University (PSU) and its Oregon partners, including Portland General Electric, have been selected by Toyota as one of six groups nationally to demonstrate and evaluate the next-generation Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHV). Portland State University will administer the program regionally.

With more than 750,000 units sold over the year, the number of electric vehicles in the global parc—primarily Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)—surpassed 2 million units in 2016, following a year of strong growth in 2015, according to the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2017.

For EVs and PHEVs in particular, certain obstacles—including consumer unease with unfamiliar technology and the lack of an adequate recharging infrastructure—will need to be overcome before sales increase.
