Patent leaks on TVS Jupiter electric scooters

TVS plans to compete fiercely in the EV market with its electric version of the Jupiter scooter

There is currently one electric two-wheeler in the portfolios of mainstream two-wheeler manufacturers such as TVS, Bajaj, and Hero MotoCorp. To strengthen its presence, TVS is launching 5kW to 25kW products. These upcoming products are expected to be launched within 18 months.

TVS’ plans were revealed recently by KN Radhakrishnan (CEO of TVS). TVS’ upcoming electric two-wheeler could have an entirely updated powertrain. This comes from a recently filed patent by the company.

This upcoming powertrain could power the Jupiter electric scooter, which will compete with the Activa electric next year.

Let’s discuss the increased range and powerful powertrain of the upcoming TVS Jupiter electric scooters.

The iQube uses a hub motor and has advantages such as quiet operation and minimal energy loss. However, in-wheel motors may not be able to do this effectively beyond 5kW.

TVS’ upcoming electric two-wheeler is likely to range from 5kW to 25kW, so a new mid-mounted motor is being developed. A recent patent application revealed surprising details about the upcoming electric powertrain.

A simple transmission system connected the mid-engine to the rear wheels. A special feature is that the gearbox housing is doubled with the swingarm. This will probably reduce the overall weight of the envisioned electric motorcycle. At the end of the motor, the housing is connected to a pivot point. The rear axle housing finishes the wheel.

The drive gear transmits power from the engine to the rear wheels. It was referred to by TVS as an “endless transmission drive.” This patent mentions both series and belt drives. Compared to hub motors, where the motor and wheels rotate at the same speed, this new drivetrain features gear reduction. This means that the engine and rear wheels rotate at different speeds.

And if we look forward to the TVS’ upcoming electric powertrain and its rivals, it’s going to be rough and tough competition for them all.

Mid-engines are most popular in vehicles with increased power. Equivalent systems are already used in electric scooters such as the Ather 450X and Ola S1 Pro. TVS will likely use this updated powertrain to create a completely upgraded performance-oriented electric motorcycle. For reference, the iQube has a 4.4kW setting that allows it to accelerate from 0-40km/h in 4.2 seconds.

Featuring an all-new mid-engine TVS Jupiter Electric enhances the overall travel experience. It can compete with the Honda Activa electric scooter scheduled to be released in January 2024.

In the petrol scooter market, Activa and Jupiter are the two most popular scooters in India. The rivalry will continue in the era of electric vehicles. TVS will appeal to a wider buyer base with its brand-new electric fashion. As of now, the iQube is already on our list of the 10 bestselling scooters in the country. February 2023 sales volume was 15,522 models, an increase of 593.57% over the previous year. TVS can even gain market share with its diversified electronics portfolio.

The iQube ST variant that was released last year is also getting a lot of attention from fans.
