A technical partnership between Olectra and Reliance brings hydrogen buses to life

Indian roads will soon be covered in carbon-free hydrogen buses from Olectra-Reliance


Introducing carbon-free hydrogen that replaces conventional public transportation. Electric bus manufacturer, Olectra Greentech Limited (OGL), plans to introduce such buses to the country through a technical partnership with Reliance.

Olectra, a subsidiary of Mega Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL), brings next-generation transportation systems to the Indian market.

Hydrogen buses are a completely carbon-free alternative to traditional public transport. Faced with the depletion of natural resources and the negative effects of air pollution and emissions, electric bus manufacturers have taken initiatives to accelerate the development of hydrogen-powered buses.

The Indian government will be able to achieve its goal of carbon-free hydrogen by implementing this initiative. Olectra aims to contribute to the country’s green energy security with its hydrogen buses, the company said in a statement.

Olectra’s Hydrogen Bus is a 12-meter low-floor bus with an adjustable seat capacity of 32 to 49 seats and a driver’s seat. With a single charge of hydrogen, it will be able to run up to 400 kilometers (from Delhi to Shimla).

“The hydrogen required to cover this range would only take about 15 minutes to produce,” stated the bus manufacturer.

As far as emissions are concerned, these buses emit only water as a byproduct of the exhaust from their tailpipes. This is a key differentiator for phasing out older diesel and petrol systems and replacing them with these eco-friendly buses. The bus has a hydrogen bottle that measures four inches in diameter. It is imperative to note that these cylinders are capable of withstand temperatures between -20 and +85 degrees Celsius.

Within the next year, Olectra, a company belonging to the MEIL Group, announced that it would bring these buses to the market.

A hydrogen fuel cell bus manufactured by KPIT-CSIR of Pune, which was launched last August, was India’s first truly homegrown hydrogen fuel cell bus. Fuel cells use hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the bus. There is only one type of wastewater that comes from the vehicle, and that is water. For reference, a single diesel bus that travels long distances typically emits 100 tons of CO2 per year.
