Ram 1500 REV locked in for Australia: Mega electric pickup truck to deliver 800km driving range

The Ram 1500 Revolution will launch in Australia “very close” the model’s US launch in 2024, with the brand’s global chief promising to prioritise Australian production to get the all-electric pick-up truck into our market as quickly as possible.

It’s the first time Ram has confirmed the model will come to Australia, where it will likely be converted from left- to right-hand drive by Ram Trucks Australia and Walkinshaw in Melbourne.

But the brand is also pursuing from-factory right-hand drive production, both for the 1500 REV and for future product, as part of a broader push to go global.

Asked directly whether the 1500 REV would go on sale in Australia, Ram Brand Chief Executive Officer Mike Koval replied: “Ultimately yes”.

Better still, the executive went on to say he would ring-fence Australian production of the 1500 REV from the very beginning, ensuring that it will arrive Down Under “very close” to its US launch in late 2024.

“The idea here, and with any future product, is that we are a global brand more than ever. Historically, Ram brand sales have been predominantly in North America. Not anymore,” he said.

“If you look at the numbers of South America, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand….this is where something like this can really help us. This is all about global growth.”

Revealed in the metal overnight at the New York Auto Show, the 1500 Revolution promises “styling, technology and capability that pushes beyond what anyone in the category could have imagined”.

And the on-paper numbers seem to back up that claim, with Ram today confirming the specifics of its first EV truck.

The 1500 REV will feature dual 250kW motors, with massive batteries that include a 168kWh option, and a 229kWh option. The bigger battery, Ram says, will allow for a massive 800km driving range.

Total output is listed at 487kW and 840Nm – unlocking a sprint to 100km/h of just over 4.4 seconds – and it will tow six tonnes, and carry 1.2 tonnes.

It will also feature an 800v architecture, allowing for 350kW fast charging, and the ability to regain 177kms in driving range after just 10 minutes plugged in.

And in good new for Australia, we are very much a part of Ram’s launch plan for the 1500 REV, and for all of its future models.

“We appreciate everything that the team in Australia and New Zealand (do), they’ve been fantastic partners for us. And you see the numbers. I mean, we’re growing by leaps and bounds year after year,” Mr Koval says.
